Alternative classics for men and women mixing European influences with casual American style
Started in 1979 by Yves Chareton, a Frenchman in the US, Hartford reimagines classic American styles with a modern, French twist. Hartford’s first pieces were vintage-inspired men’s shirts made from Oxford and chambray. The cool, broken-in looking shirts quickly found an audience among famous creatives and musicians, like Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton.
Now based in Paris, Hartford has expanded into a full line for men and women with the same focus on “alternative classics.” So what does that mean? The “alternative” bit can be seen in amusing and elegant details with a touch of humor. The “classic” piece comes from the fabrics and cuts of the garments. The finest European fabrics are used such as French linen, cotton from Albini in Italy, and Liberty prints and there’s an undeniable focus on a tailored, flattering fit.
Specifically, the men’s collection features a subtle mix of casual and refined style anchored by button down shirts in Oxford or Flannel, unstructured jackets, and vintage-inspired pants. The women’s look borrows from the men’s collection using the same menswear fabrics, but reimagined into urban boho styles including button up shirts, printed tops, and boyfriend pants.
Why I chose it
I love the casual, yet refined styles. The French influence comes through in the exceptional fabrics and quality, but there is a definite American worn-in, casual vibe to the pieces as well. These pieces signal “style” without screaming. Also, the Hartford shirts are made to order for us, allowing us the flexibility to customize the fit and style creating exclusive pieces for orsden.com.
